Pastoral Associate

Joan Walsh

Joan Walsh was appointed as Pastoral Associate for Christ the King Parish, Lockleys, in September 2012.

Joan was born in Port Pirie and spent her younger years on the family farm near Port Germein in the mid north of South Australia.

After leaving St Mark’s High School she worked as a clerk with the Courts Department in Port Pirie for eighteen years before moving to Adelaide in 1991 after the birth of her youngest child. Joan has two daughters and three sons, and it was in response to their questions about stories from the Bible that she decided she needed to learn more about the faith she was handing on to them. She began by studying the Old Testament via six-week Adult Education courses and commenced her undergraduate theological studies through the Catholic Theological College (situated at the Adelaide College of Divinity in Brooklyn Park) in 1998. She graduated with a Bachelor of Ministry in 2007.

Since then Joan has been an active parish volunteer and continued to do further study, particularly in the areas of Liturgy and Sacraments. She was employed as Religious Educator (Sacraments) and Coordinator of Music and Liturgy at the Henley Beach Parish for five years, and has worked extensively in the areas of Disability and Aged Care. As well as her pastoral care role Joan also works as Administrator of a retirement village in Hove and is President of the Lockleys Conference of St Vincent de Paul. She is passionate about Justice and Peace, hospitality, camping in the outback and music!

Parish Priest

Fr. Michael Trainor

Fr. Michael Trainor was appointed as parish priest of Lockleys in January 2019. He was born in Tailem Bend. After attending Catholic primary and secondary schools, Michael entered St Francis Xavier’s Seminary, Rostrevor, and was ordained by Archbishop Gleeson in 1974.

A few years of pastoral ministry in parishes led him to undertake post-graduate study in USA (Chicago, and later Boston), Israel and Melbourne, completing a Master of Arts (in biblical literature and languages), Master of Education and a Doctorate in Theology. On returning to Adelaide, Michael taught at the Seminary, coordinated adult education for the Archdiocese and taught in the faculty of theology at Flinders University in biblical studies with the Adelaide College of Divinity.  Currently, he teaches with the Australian Catholic University and is engaged in inter-faith and inter-religious dialogue.

He is an executive board member of the International Council of Christians and Jews (ICCJ) and chairs the Australian Council of Christians and Jews (ACCJ).

Within Adelaide, he co-chairs the SA Council of Christians and Jews and the Uniting Church-Roman Catholic Dialogue.

Michael has authored several books on theology, education and the Bible. And for a hobby, he regularly flies a glider out of Gawler. This helps him come to a realistic perspective about himself, his world and the parish!
